Guardian Council Spokesperson: Military Service Duration Reduced to 14 Months

The spokesperson for the Guardian Council announced that the duration of military service has been reduced to 14 months.

Hadi Tahan Nazif, spokesperson for the Guardian Council, reported the reduction in military service.

He stated that the ruling to reduce the duration of military service, with the amendments made and in compliance with Article 4 of the Public Conscription Law, and within the framework of the Armed Forces General Staff’s measures, was not found to be contrary to religious standards and the constitution.

Thus, the duration of military service, including the training period, will decrease by three months from 17 months to 14 months.

Previously, the Islamic Consultative Assembly had approved the bill to reduce military service in coordination with the Armed Forces General Staff and in accordance with the Seventh Development Plan bill, and it was awaiting the Guardian Council’s opinion. In recent years, some politicians and members of the Islamic Consultative Assembly have expressed opinions on the need to end conscription in Iran and to make joining the armed forces professional and voluntary.
