Hannah Neumann: We must not let the Iranian regime get away with it

Hannah Neumann, a German representative in the European Parliament, reacted to the announcement of conditional pardons for protesters by the judiciary and the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic agreeing to these conditions. She emphasized that while she is happy for all the prisoners who are released, we must not let the Iranian regime get away with its propaganda about the pardon.

On Monday, she wrote in a series of tweets that a pardon essentially applies to someone who has committed a crime, whereas most of the individuals targeted by the Iranian government are simply imprisoned for protesting.

Ms. Neumann also warned that one must be cautious regarding the announcement of pardons for prisoners in Iran and added that there is even a risk that the regime might use this to carry out more executions under the guise of pardons.

She reminded that before receiving a pardon, protesters must request forgiveness, which is tantamount to a forced confession.
