UN envoy’s harsh criticism over burning mazut
David Boyd, the UN special envoy on human rights and the environment, has strongly criticized Iran for burning mazut.
He wrote that Iran is burning mazut, one of the dirtiest fuels, to generate electricity. This action produces a massive amount of toxic air that poisons millions of people in Iran and violates their human rights, including the right to a healthy environment. Iran must stop burning mazut.
Iranian media reported last week that the air pollution situation in Karaj, Ahvaz, Shadegan, Masjed Soleyman, Dezful, Susangerd, Shushtar, Andimeshk, Yazd, and various cities in East Azerbaijan, including Tabriz, is critical.
The Iranian Meteorological Organization also issued a red alert regarding the decline in air quality in Tehran and Karaj.
The shortage of gas within Iran as fuel for refineries has led the government to resort to mazut again, which has resulted in severe and unprecedented air pollution in various cities.
