Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Foreign Minister, Killed in Helicopter Crash

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister, was killed in a helicopter crash.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Foreign Minister of Iran, who had traveled to East Azerbaijan Province on Sunday, May 20, along with Ebrahim Raisi for the inauguration of the joint Qiz Qaleh Si Dam with the Republic of Azerbaijan on the border river Aras, was killed in a helicopter crash.

He, who held the helm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ebrahim Raisi’s government, was considered one of the trusted figures of the regime.

The extent of the trust the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran had in him can be summarized in this sentence: he was one of the first Iranian officials to openly negotiate with Americans in the trilateral Iran-U.S.-Iraq talks before the Iran-U.S. nuclear negotiations.

He was also the first official to travel to London after the reopening of the British Embassy in Tehran during Hassan Rouhani’s first government and met with Philip Hammond, the then Foreign Secretary of that country.
