Human Rights Watch condemned Lebanon and Cyprus

Human Rights Watch announced that the European Union continues to financially support Lebanese institutions without overseeing the adherence to fundamental rights, while most of these institutions are involved in the forced deportation of Syrian refugees.

In a new report released by Human Rights Watch on Wednesday, September 4, 2023, it is stated that Syrian refugees trying to reach Cyprus from Lebanon are forcibly returned to their country by Lebanese authorities.

The report emphasizes that despite the European Union’s apparent interest in human rights commitments, European financial aid to Lebanon’s security agencies for border management continues, while these forces repeatedly deport Syrian refugees illegally and return them to their country.

The organization described this action as a clear violation of international laws and, using obtained evidence including photos, videos, aircraft and boat tracking data, and observations from 16 Syrian refugees attempting to leave Lebanon, reached this conclusion.
