The historic and fate-making debate between the two rivals of the US presidential election was finally hosted by ABC. Both candidates had practiced for the debate, and reports indicated that Trump, contrary to Harris, had taken a simpler approach against the advice of his advisors. Only in the final days did he focus on practicing specific moments and selecting heavy-hitting lines. On the other hand, many Democratic experts were concerned that the several days Harris spent practicing and studying political and economic texts and numerous notes might have the opposite effect. When the cameras turned to the stage and the two rivals appeared, in the initial moments, Harris surprised everyone. She went towards Trump, who quickly retreated to his podium and extended his hand, firmly shaking hers and loudly stating his name. In this way, Harris responded strongly right from the start to Trump’s insults and mockery, pushing him back severely. The atmosphere created by Harris dominated the entire debate. The initial questions and discussions on the economy and livelihood were a good opportunity for Trump to push his opponent back. This time, Harris strongly stuck to her economic plan, repeatedly referring to her own proposals. She emphasized specific life issues of the people and made it clear that she was well-prepared to distance herself from Biden and tackle the existing problems by presenting housing and tax reduction plans for ordinary people. Trump, until the end, failed to bring Harris down, realizing the fact that for three and a half years, he had the opportunity to implement such plans but did not. From the beginning, Trump eyed the debate moderators and was deeply afraid of facing Harris. It was Harris who looked him in the eye, and with the help of the cameras and her posture, compensated for her short stature. This very point provided the basis for Harris’s greatest achievement. In several specific instances, Trump fell into delusions, not seeking anything beyond empty words. In the discussion on immigrants, he repeated the bizarre rumor of Haitian immigrants eating domestic cats in Springfield, Ohio. Harris’s amusing reaction and Trump’s smirk, along with the moderator’s warning, openly declared that the city officials had outright denied this news. The abortion debate, which could have been a platform for Trump’s comeback and an opportunity to reform his discourse in this area, was provided for him. With his claim about the desirability of executing infants born to Democrats, especially Tim Walz’s team, Harris’s deputy and the governor of Minnesota, he went off track. Harris’s response was striking, although she clearly recognized that her rival was self-destructing. It was a pity that he was wasting this opportunity and allowing the negative impact of Trump’s words to linger in the minds of the audience.

In the foreign policy discussion, Trump’s strange behavior progressed oddly. In the debate on the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan, Harris had an excellent opportunity to criticize Trump, but it was Harris who turned the tables without fear. He clearly demonstrated Trump’s destructive role during his presidency. Trump got worse and worse. He said Harris is an enemy of Israel and Israel will disappear with Harris in charge. Harris first allowed American Muslims to absorb his words well and then moved on to supporting Israel, where it was clear Trump really didn’t focus on the debate content and practice. The discussion was about Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, where he practically stood alongside Trump. The debate was held in Pennsylvania, a state highly sensitive for this year’s elections. Harris warned about the danger Putin poses to Europe, especially Poland, addressing the 300,000 Polish-American residents of Pennsylvania and cautioning about their homeland’s future. Trump pressured his stance in the swamp and proudly supported Orban, the extremist Prime Minister of Hungary, despised in Europe. It was enough for American citizens with Eastern European roots to hear that Trump refused to accept that Ukraine’s victory is in America’s interest. Harris strongly caught Trump off guard with this foreign policy discussion, describing him as weak and incompetent, something no one might expect to hear about Trump. The fire Harris ignited by mocking Trump’s lackluster meetings and the lies he tells in his meetings shook his focus and influenced everything. Trump, who had recently admitted losing the 2020 election, denied this defeat that had happened a few days ago. Everything was tangled for him, and even though he spoke for five minutes more than Harris in total, he missed all these opportunities to gain a favorable position. Ultimately, it must be noted that Harris seized several opportunities and distanced himself from Biden. He explicitly stated that he is not Joe Biden and sarcastically mentioned that he certainly is not Donald Trump. He needed to wait for the polls and see the impact of this debate to understand if the candidate’s position has changed or not. Nevertheless, all quick polls after the debate showed Harris as the debate winner. In one poll, 92% of undecided respondents voted for Harris’s superiority. Although it is natural that this does not mean that the majority of them have definitively decided based on this debate. A historic night unfolded, and Trump became angry and embarrassed. He quickly appeared alongside a Fox News reporter to make up for the astonishment everyone had, as candidates usually refrain from such a move that shows weakness after a debate. There is a week left until the final day of the elections, and Americans are gradually voting through postal ballots. Harris and her campaign are eager for another debate, indicating their satisfaction with the current situation. Ultimately, Philip Rines was the star of last night’s debate, preparing Harris well to confront Trump.
