Kamal Taqvinjad, the Secretary of the Cabinet, announced a new tariff for importing iPhones on Monday, 13th of Aban. He stated that the customs duty for Apple phones in the current year has been set at 15% for phones over $600 in commercial transactions and 30% in other transactions.
IRNA news agency, quoting the Secretary of the Cabinet, also stated that according to the government’s decision, the customs duty for Apple phones under $600 has been set at 5% in commercial transactions and 6% in other transactions.
This tariff was announced while earlier reports of a 96% tariff on importing Apple phones were circulated, sparking a wave of criticism on social media.
Abdolnasser Hemati, the Minister of Economy, said on Saturday that the government’s decision to impose a 96% tariff on iPhone imports was not our decision, and the new tariff will likely be close to 30%.
Previously, in a decision by the Council of Ministers published on the 9th of Aban and caused controversy, a 96% profit margin was set for iPhone imports, meaning that applicants would have to pay up to twice the original price after the import ban is lifted.
