Prison sentences for journalist couple and child rights activist: Kamyar Fakour 8 months, and Sournaz Ahmadi 3 years and 6 months
The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that the sentences of Sournaz Ahmadi, a civil and child rights activist, and her husband Kamyar Fakour, an environmental journalist and labor activist, were reduced to three years and six months and eight months in prison, respectively, in the appeals court. Sournaz Ahmadi, who holds a master’s degree in social work, was previously sentenced to six years in prison by Branch 15 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Salavati. Announcing her conviction in the initial court on her Instagram page, Ms. Ahmadi wrote, ‘I received a six-year prison sentence in the initial court. It was worth it for the sense of belonging to a powerful large group striving to take control of its destiny.’
Kamyar Fakour, a journalist and civil activist, was also sentenced to one year in prison in this court, and according to his wife, this sentence has been added to his previous sentences.
Sournaz Ahmadi, who is active in supporting workers’ and children’s rights, was arrested on November 6 this year along with her husband Kamyar Fakour, and was released on December 7 after 31 days on a bail of 500 million tomans.
