Imran Khan calls for the release of his detained supporters
Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has called for the immediate release of his supporters and other party leaders who were arrested during recent violent protests.
These individuals were arrested during protests against Mr. Khan’s detention. Mr. Khan has stated that these arrests are illegal and has described them as kidnappings.
Police officials say that more than three thousand people have been arrested during last week’s unrest.
Imran Khan was arrested on corruption charges but was released on bail by order of the Supreme Court.
The Pakistani government has accused the detainees of attacking government and military facilities and has stated that they should be tried under special laws in a military court.
Human rights activists say that this means the accused cannot request bail and are not allowed to appeal the verdict in a civilian appellate court.
