Increased Pressure for Dianne Feinstein’s Resignation
After it was announced that Dianne Feinstein, one of the senior Democratic senators of the U.S. Congress, had her medical leave extended and will not be returning to the Senate floor for now, some of her party members called for her resignation so that, according to them, this critical Democratic seat does not remain vacant.
These pressures are particularly due to Ms. Feinstein’s presence on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for selecting and confirming judges in the U.S. judicial system.
Democrats hold a majority in the Senate with 51 seats compared to the Republicans’ 49 seats, but Ms. Feinstein’s absence, as the senior senator from California, makes this majority fragile in votes and especially jeopardizes the judiciary committee in Congress.
The 89-year-old Ms. Feinstein had previously announced that she does not intend to run for re-election or maintain her seat, but there are still about two years remaining in her current term in the Senate.
