Increase in tension between Iran and Azerbaijan: Baku arrested 5 people on charges of spying for Iran

With the rise in tension between Iran and Azerbaijan, on Monday, Baku announced that it had arrested five of its citizens on charges of spying for Iran.

This arrest took place after Baku and Tehran accused each other of hostile rhetoric last week.

Baku’s security services announced that these arrests were part of measures aimed at countering destructive intelligence activities conducted by intelligence services against Azerbaijan.

According to Baku officials, these five individuals were gathering information about the military, including the procurement of Israeli and Turkish drones and other infrastructure of the country.

Earlier this month, Baku authorities arrested 17 men who they claimed were linked to an illegal armed group supported by Iran within Azerbaijani territory.
