The International Organization for Migration reports that 63,000 people have died or disappeared on migration routes over the past ten years.
The report from the International Organization for Migration shows that between the years 2014 and 2023, more than 63,000 people have lost their lives or disappeared on migration routes around the world, with over 28,000 of these cases occurring in the Mediterranean Sea alone.
In its ten-year report, the International Organization for Migration stated that despite the life-threatening risks, some migrants still attempt to cross the Mediterranean.
Jorge Galindo, spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration, says these statistics are alarming. After ten years, we still see people losing their lives in the pursuit of a better life. For example, we saw that 2023 was the deadliest year recorded with more than 8,500 deaths.
He explained the reasons for this phenomenon, stating that there are numerous causes. The reason for more than 60 percent of the recorded deaths in this report is drowning. In the Mediterranean Sea alone, over 28,000 deaths and disappearances have been recorded.
The International Organization for Migration also reports in its findings the discovery of a high number of unidentified bodies.
