International Telecommunication Union Ruling: Starlink Obliged to Cooperate with Iran

The International Telecommunication Union’s decision obliges Starlink to cooperate with Iran

According to the Ministry of Communications, in the latest meeting of the Radio Regulations Board of the International Telecommunication Union, Iran’s supplementary documents and evidence regarding Starlink’s unauthorized satellite network operations in Iran were reviewed.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) deemed Starlink’s satellite internet services in Iran to be in violation of international regulations and requested that SpaceX, the owner of Starlink satellite internet, urgently align its actions with Iran’s territorial rules and seek a license to operate in Iran through the country’s regulatory body.

Although our assessments show that the ITU does not have specific power to force Starlink to cooperate with Iran, it does not seem that SpaceX is obliged to cooperate with Iran, and this matter is merely a recommendation.
