Iran became a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization

The Islamic Republic has finally officially joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization today after 15 years. Iran had been accepted as an observer member in this organization since 2005 and submitted its request for full membership in 2008.

The 23rd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization leaders began virtually in Delhi with the presence of officials from Iran, China, India, Pakistan, Russia, and four Central Asian countries. At the beginning of this summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while welcoming Iran’s joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the signing of Belarus’s accession memorandum, stated, ‘I am pleased to say that Iran is joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization family as a full member.’
