The Iranian Human Rights Organization states that the number of fatalities could be over 25,000.
The Iranian Human Rights Organization says that the statistics released by the Iranian government yesterday regarding the number of deaths in recent protests are unreliable.
The National Security Council, a subsidiary of the Iranian Ministry of Interior, has announced the death toll as 3,117.
In a statement, the Iranian Human Rights Organization mentioned that the Islamic Republic has a documented and lengthy history of systematically underreporting deadly governmental violence. For instance, over the past five years, officials have officially announced on average only about 12% of the executions carried out each year, while concealing the remaining cases related to the death penalty that the Iranian Human Rights Organization has verified through two independent sources.
The organization further added that if the pattern of underreporting executions by the government has also been applied to the fatalities from the protests, the actual number of deaths could be around 25,000.
