Iran in the Democratic Party Manifesto

The Democrats’ manifesto has been released on the eve of the party’s convention in Chicago.

This manifesto, prepared by the drafting committee mostly before Biden’s departure and Harris’s entry into the election, encompasses the party’s approach and its candidate’s stance on various areas of politics, social and economic management, and international relations.

It is natural that a significant part of the policies is formulated with a progressive approach, and it should be noted that the progressive and ultra-liberal policies of the left spectrum of the Democratic Party, which is different from the common political left concept outside the United States, have gained considerable influence in foreign policy. Biden administration’s approaches in this manifesto have been approved and reflected, while the issue of Iran and the Middle East is still evolving, and what Biden needs to do and what Harris is expected to do are influenced by the specific dynamics of the regional developments.

One of the most important points about Iran emphasized in the manifesto, not so unexpectedly, is Trump’s mistake in exiting the JCPOA. Democrats do not promise a return to the JCPOA but pledge that Iran will not acquire nuclear weapons.

The Democratic Party manifesto has spoken about the position of power towards Iran and described Trump’s behavior towards Iran’s attacks and provocations as a position of weakness and incapacity. In particular, Trump’s reactions to Iran’s attack on the Ain al-Asad base have been highlighted in this statement. Democrats have dealt with one of the most important foreign policy issues, naturally the Gaza crisis, with a firm and decisive stance, and have repeated past literature. Reiterating support for Israel and the right to sovereignty, along with emphasizing assistance to the people of Gaza and the formation of a Palestinian government, are important points in the manifesto. All of this has been included in a manifesto that may be somewhat different from Harris’s foreign policy. National Security Advisor Harris’s deputy, Philip Gordon, who was a member of the negotiating team for the Iran nuclear deal in 2015, presented a specific section related to Iran in the Democratic Party manifesto to familiarize you with its details.
