Iraq to Pay Gas Debt to Iran with Oil

Iraq will give oil instead of gas debt to Iran

Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, the Prime Minister of Iraq, announced on Tuesday that Iraq will begin a barter exchange of crude oil with Iranian gas to resolve the recurring issue of delayed payments to Tehran due to the need for U.S. approval.

Al-Sudani said that Iran reduced its gas exports to Iraq by more than 50 percent starting from July 1st after Baghdad failed to obtain U.S. approval for paying its debts to Iran. However, Tehran has now agreed to resume gas exports in exchange for crude oil.

Al-Sudani stated in a televised speech that this agreement was reached during discussions with an Iranian delegation that was in Baghdad since Saturday of this week.
