Iraq’s Parliament Passed Election Law Reforms
Iraqi representatives approved controversial reforms to the country’s election law on Monday. The new reforms weaken the chances of smaller parties and independent candidates to win seats in the upcoming elections.
These reforms, supported by the Coordination Framework consisting of parties close to Iran, change the electoral district map and redefine each province as an electoral district.
The bill was passed with 206 votes in favor and 12 against in Iraq’s 329-member parliament. The remaining representatives were absent.
The previous Iraqi election law was passed following widespread anti-government protests in 2019. The previous law gave independent candidates and popular movements a better chance of winning representation seats.
