Israeli airstrike on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon

The Israeli army announced that it targeted the central command headquarters of the Lebanese militia group in southern Beirut.

The explosions in Beirut occurred just minutes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Israeli Prime Minister had previously rejected the proposal by the United States and a group of its allies for a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese militia.

Images released from the explosion sites in southern Beirut show thick smoke rising into the air. Eyewitnesses have said that the intensity of the Friday night explosions shook the city’s buildings.
