Issuance of a Judicial Ruling for Treating the Mental Epidemic of Unveiling
Based on a ruling by a judge in the Ershad Judicial Complex, the image of which was published on Sunday, a woman has been sentenced to two months in prison, bi-weekly health certification, and a two-year travel ban for unveiling.
Ali Omidi, a judge at the Tehran Criminal Court 2 who issued this verdict, described the right to freedom of dress as an infectious mental illness under the term ‘unveiling,’ which leads to the spread of sexual promiscuity. For this reason, the defendant in the case has been sentenced to six months in prison, counseling for treatment of the illness, and a travel ban from the country.
The trial of women opposing mandatory hijab in judicial courts is among the actions of the Iranian government to suppress women. However, both official and unofficial reports indicate that a significant number of women, especially in the country’s major cities, continue to insist on their opposition to mandatory hijab, and their numbers are increasing.
