Italy’s Right Wing Becomes Acquainted with the Realities of Governance
Now that Giorgia Meloni has assumed the position of Prime Minister in her country, signs are gradually emerging of her and her supporting movement’s efforts to align their policies with the realities of governing a country like Italy. Meloni has entrusted economic positions to figures who are sometimes moderate, experienced, and uncontroversial. In foreign policy, she has made serious efforts to present herself as a stable ally of the European Union. She has emphasized the continuation of the previous government’s policies towards Russia and alignment with Europe and the United States in supporting Ukrainians.
However, it should be noted that fundamentally, Meloni, her party, and the two allied extremist movements have serious plans for changes in Italy’s politics and society, which they will pursue stealthily.
Anti-immigration policies should be considered as one of the first programs that are likely to manifest in laws and execution.
Beyond this, the deep and structural ties of the three united right-wing movements in Italy’s current government with international right-wing movements, with one end connected to Moscow, will certainly pose challenges for Europe and the United States.
