Javaid Rehman described the Islamic Republic’s treatment of the Baha’i minority in Iran as a crime against humanity and genocide.
Javaid Rehman, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights violations in Iran, called the treatment of the Baha’i minority in Iran during the 1980s a crime against humanity and genocide, and he called for an international investigation into this matter.
Mr. Rehman, who will hand over this mission to another UN rapporteur in a few days, published a report on Monday, July 23, about the situation of Baha’is in Iran.
In this report, he wrote that since the 1980s, Baha’is in Iran have been targeted with the intent of genocide, and harassment and attacks against religious, ethnic, and linguistic minorities and political opponents have continued without the perpetrators being punished.
Mr. Rehman added in his report that there should be no impunity for such gross human rights violations, regardless of when they were committed.
This is not the first time that the persecution of Baha’is in Iran has been described as a crime against humanity.
