The spokesperson for the judiciary stated that activities related to cryptocurrencies are prohibited by government decree.
Asghar Jahangir, the judiciary spokesperson, announced in his press conference today that, according to the country’s current definitive policy, domestic cryptocurrency activities are banned.
He noted that cryptocurrencies have not only engaged governments and central banks around the world but also within Iran, multiple meetings are being held on this matter.
Jahangir added that it has become clear that apparently, the central bank has not properly fulfilled its duties in organizing, drafting regulations, and overseeing cryptocurrencies.
He continued by saying that since cryptocurrencies often lack a clear backing and central banks do not recognize them as money, they fall outside of supervisory processes. Therefore, activities such as money laundering and professional fraud are very common in them, and they can provide a suitable platform for criminal activities.
The judiciary spokesperson stated that the country’s definitive policy at present is that the cabinet, with its decree, has banned domestic cryptocurrency activities and has announced that the risks and dangers faced by those who engage in these transactions will be their own responsibility.
