Karaj Representative: Alborz’s Critical Infrastructure is Under Threat from Land Subsidence
Alireza Abbasi, the representative of Karaj and a member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Commission, recently announced that critical infrastructure such as gas and water pipelines, highways, and railways are under threat due to the subsidence crisis, and stated that Alborz province is among the top five provinces affected by subsidence.
Omid Shirzadi, a geology expert, told Tejarat News that the impact of subsidence on urban infrastructure is one of the most significant dangers threatening the safety of city residents. Roads, rails, tunnels, and urban and industrial buildings are at risk with increasing subsidence, and since there is no opportunity to predict this occurrence, it can lead to disaster.
Shirzadi identified the main reason for subsidence as the depletion and decline of groundwater and emphasized that some subsidence in Iran is irreversible.
According to reports, in 18 provinces of the country, the rate of subsidence has exceeded 10 centimeters per year, with the provinces of Isfahan, Isfahan Plain, Borkhar, Kerman, Tehran, and Alborz (south and southwest parts of the city) experiencing the highest intensity.
