Knife attack on 4 American university professors in China

According to American and Chinese officials, four assistant professors from a university in Iowa were injured in a knife attack while sightseeing in the city of Jilin, located in northeastern China.

Local police said the incident occurred before noon on Monday, June 11, local time, in a public park in the city of Jilin, the provincial capital of the same name, and the attacker, a 55-year-old man from this city with the surname Qiu, has been arrested.

Police added that the individual encountered a foreigner while walking in the park and then attacked this tourist and three other foreigners who were with him, as well as a Chinese tourist who tried to stop him, with a knife.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated in a statement on Tuesday, June 12, that this incident was a random attack and will not affect the relations between the people of China and the United States, and government agencies will continue their efforts to ensure the safety of foreign tourists.

According to Reuters, the American citizens had apparently gone to the public park in Jilin to visit a temple.
