Lavrov: Iran has shown it has its own national interests and pride
Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, said the Strait of Hormuz was completely open before the start of US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28, and the issue of charging fees for ship passage was not raised.
Lavrov stated that after the war began, Iran demonstrated it has its own national interests, pride, and unique traditions, adding that Iran’s historical background dates back over a thousand years.
He emphasized that the discussion of charging fees for passing through the Strait of Hormuz emerged after the war started. Lavrov also mentioned that Russia does not want fees imposed for passage through the Strait, and this matter should be further discussed in negotiations.
He also said that the United States now wants the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened, while Iran has conditioned this action on the reduction or removal of sanctions.
