Lavrov’s Trip to Turkey for Grain Export Talks from Ukraine
Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, has traveled to Turkey to participate in talks regarding the export of grain from Ukraine.
Mr. Lavrov is set to attend a series of discussions, one of the most important of which concerns the future of the key agreement on exporting grain from Ukrainian ports through a secure corridor in the Black Sea.
This agreement has been the only significant diplomatic progress so far in the Ukraine war, achieved with the mediation of Turkey and the United Nations in July last year.
The Ukraine war has also brought Ankara and Moscow closer over Syria, where they support opposing sides.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Turkey, who must try to secure a victory in next month’s elections, is keen to return some of the millions of Syrian refugees in Turkey to their country to boost his chances.
Despite the war, Turkey has managed to maintain good relations with both Ukraine and Russia simultaneously and is pressuring them to resume peace talks.
