Lukashenko Wins Belarus Presidential Election
The Belarusian Election Commission has predictably declared Alexander Lukashenko the winner of the presidential election for the seventh consecutive time, an election described as unfair and unfree and has faced criticism.
According to the state news agency Belta, the president, who is supported by Russia and has been in power for 30 years, has secured 86.82% of the votes based on preliminary results.
The head of the election commission announced this news, noting that this percentage of votes is the highest ever allocated to Lukashenko.
In post-voting surveys, 87.6% of the votes were recorded in Lukashenko’s name. The voter turnout in this country, often referred to as the last dictatorship in Europe, was announced at 85.7%, which is higher than the 2020 participation rate of 84.38%. At that time, Lukashenko was declared the winner with 80.1% of the votes.
