Macron and the European Commission President’s Visit to China

Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, along with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, hope to resume relations with China through a three-day visit.

This visit begins on Wednesday.

Tensions between Brussels and Beijing have increased since China refused to condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

It is expected that Mr. Macron and Ms. von der Leyen will ask President Xi Jinping to engage in talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

At the same time, it is said that they are looking to pressure China not to send weapons to Russia.

Journalists say that Beijing is concerned about trade and, in light of Washington’s tough approach towards China, is willing to reach agreements with the European Union.

Meanwhile, Chinese media have criticized Ms. von der Leyen’s recent remarks about the risks of trading with China.
