Mahmoud Dowlatabadi says our rulers do not feel the need for historical memory.
The Etemad newspaper on Thursday, March 30, published parts of an interview with the renowned writer Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, in which he refers to a statement by Bahram Beyzai, saying that our rulers do not feel the need for historical memory and learning from it.
Dowlatabadi quoted Bahram Beyzai, who had said that people do not have historical memory, and this point was very thought-provoking for him.
Dowlatabadi, referring to the widespread protests in Iran, said that in the recent events, as observed, the response was extremely harsh, which was not at all proportional to the norms of the protests. A civil protest requires a civil response, not killing and such actions.
In another part of his speech with the Etemad yearbook, Dowlatabadi said the reality is that in our country, as long as one can remember, there has been no opportunity given for the flourishing of thought among individuals, and in every period, thinkers and intellectuals have been suppressed, scattered, or even eliminated under some pretext.
