Manipulation in Google Maps: Mahsa Amini Hotel and Pahlavi Street

The name of Valiasr Street in Tehran has been changed to its former name, Pahlavi Street, on Google Maps.

At the same time, some other changes, including a hotel named Mahsa Amini, are visible on Google Maps. It is unclear who made these changes on Google Maps; however, it is possible that the name changes were carried out by Iranian activists.

There is a history of Iranian activists making changes to Google results in the past. For instance, in 2004, following the use of a name other than Persian Gulf by National Geographic, Iranian activists designed a Google bomb page. When users searched for the alternate name used for the Persian Gulf, they would see a page stating that the gulf they were looking for could not be found, and no body of water with that name ever existed. The correct name is the Persian Gulf, which has always been Persian and always will be.
