Marco Rubio fully supports the U.S. in implementing the snapback mechanism against Iran.
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that with the activation of the snapback mechanism, three European countries, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, have initiated the process of re-imposing U.N. sanctions on Iran.
Rubio added that the return of sanctions is a direct response to Iran’s continued defiance of its nuclear commitments.
The United States supports the decision of the three European countries and urges Iran to engage in serious diplomatic negotiations to resolve the nuclear issue.
He also stated in a declaration that these three European countries have provided clear examples of Iran’s significant non-compliance with its nuclear commitments, creating a solid basis for the initiation of the snapback mechanism.
The U.S. Secretary of State noted that the three European countries could have activated the snapback mechanism since 2019, but instead, they preferred to first pursue intensive engagement to offer Iran a diplomatic solution to exit the nuclear tension strategy.
In this statement, the U.S. State Department, appreciating the actions of its European allies, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, clarified that in the coming weeks, we will work with them and other members of the U.N. Security Council to successfully complete the snapback of sanctions and international restrictions against Iran, as directed by the President in Presidential National Security Memorandum number 2.
The U.S. Secretary of State emphasized that the United States remains available for direct engagement with Iran to achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution to its nuclear issue.
Marco Rubio stated that the snapback does not contradict the serious readiness of the U.S. for diplomacy but rather strengthens it, and announced, I urge Iranian leaders to take the necessary immediate actions to ensure that their nation never acquires nuclear weapons, to step towards peace, and consequently enhance the prosperity of the Iranian people.
