Masoud Pezeshkian travels to Iraq

Iranian state media say Masoud Pezeshkian will go to Iraq on Wednesday, September 12, marking his first foreign trip as president.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Sunday, September 9, that Mr. Pezeshkian is set to travel to Baghdad with a high-ranking Iranian delegation to meet with senior Iraqi officials.

According to Mohammad Kazem Al-Sadeq, Iran’s ambassador in Baghdad, this trip is taking place at the invitation of Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Sudani.

Mr. Al-Sadeq also mentioned, without providing details, that the two countries are expected to sign memorandums of understanding on cooperation and security during this trip. According to the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad, these agreements were initially supposed to be signed during the presidency of Ebrahim Raisi and during his planned visit to Iraq.
