Matiullah Wesa, a civil activist in Afghanistan, was arrested.

The family of Matiullah Wesa, a civil activist and head of the Pen Path Association, says the Taliban arrested him in Kabul, the capital. The reason for his arrest has not been announced.

He was extensively active in the field of education rights, especially for girls in Afghanistan. Mr. Wesa collaborated with tribal leaders across Afghanistan for the reopening of schools and libraries.

The Taliban say that reopening secondary schools for girls and allowing women to attend universities requires a suitable environment.

On Monday, two women who had protested in Kabul against the ban on female students were arrested.
