Microsoft: Russian operations aimed at influencing the U.S. presidential election have begun

Microsoft reports that a Russian online campaign aimed at influencing the U.S. presidential election has started over the past 45 days, but its pace is slower compared to previous elections.

Researchers from the company stated in their report on Wednesday, April 18, that accounts linked to Russia are promoting divisive content, such as Washington’s support for Ukraine in the war against Russia, among American audiences.

The Russian embassy in Washington declined to respond to Reuters’ questions on this matter, but the Kremlin said last month that it does not interfere in the U.S. presidential election, which will be held in November. The Russian government also denied allegations of propaganda aimed at influencing the results of the U.S. presidential elections in 2016 and 2020.

Microsoft researchers added that although the advertising campaign by Russian-linked actors has not been as intense as in previous elections, it may escalate in the coming months.
