Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, stated that the parliament will provide practical responses to legitimate protests that do not break societal norms.
In his speech before the Wednesday session, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf did not refer to the more than two months of nationwide protests in Iran. Instead, he mentioned that addressing the demands for the ranking of teachers and educators, the Mehr Afarin plan, and the attention to the protests of retirees, construction workers, and students preparing for entrance exams are examples of addressing protests.
These statements are made while, in recent days, nurses have resumed their protests, teachers are being arrested, and workers’ strikes have expanded.
Previously, a large group of Iranian parliament members had labeled the nationwide protests in Iran as riots and, in a letter to the head of the judiciary, had called for issuing harsh sentences for those arrested.
The Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran has, in some instances, also cut off the voices of protesting representatives.
