Moldova's President: Moscow Tried to Install a Puppet Government

The President of Moldova claims Moscow has attempted to install a puppet government.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu accused the Kremlin on Monday, February 13th, of plotting to overthrow the government of this small republic neighboring Ukraine.

According to Ms. Sandu, Moldovan security officials have confirmed that Moscow has attempted, through a conspiracy involving violent protests by the Moldovan opposition, to overthrow the country’s government and install a puppet regime.

Moldova, a former Soviet republic with a population of 2.6 million, is a poor country bordering Romania and Ukraine, striving to join the European Union. This country officially applied for EU membership in the summer of 2022.

The Transnistria region is a narrow strip in eastern Moldova bordering western Ukraine, which has been administered by Russia-aligned separatists since the end of the war with Moldova’s central government in 1992.
