The Netherlands Convicted in the Case of Selling Chemical Weapons to Iraq

A court in the Netherlands on Wednesday, November 15, sentenced a Dutch company named Forafina Beleggingen to pay compensation to five chemical victims of the Iran-Iraq war. The amount of this compensation has not yet been determined.

This verdict was issued while the owners of the mentioned company refused to attend the court to defend themselves.

In a statement, the court announced that the five Iranian victims lost their health forever after three chemical attacks with mustard gas by Iraq between 1984 and 1986, during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war. According to the court’s reasoning, the defendants knew or should have known that thionyl chloride, the chemical sold to Iraq, was used to produce mustard gas.
