New US House Bill to Ban Sale of Sensitive People’s Information to Iran
The United States House of Representatives, a week after passing the controversial TikTok ban bill, has passed another bill aimed at protecting American users’ information from foreign countries.
The new bill, called the Protection of Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries or HR 7520, prohibits data broker companies from selling personally identifiable information of Americans to foreign countries like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
Data broker companies that violate the law and sell sensitive information such as location data or health data will face financial penalties from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
The HR 7520 bill was passed with the green light from 414 members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
With the approval of the House of Representatives, the discussed bill now needs to enter the Senate and, if approved by the Senate, will require the signature of the President.
