Over 50% Increase in Global COVID-19 Cases
The World Health Organization has reported an over 50% increase in global COVID-19 cases over a one-month period at the end of 2023 compared to the same time last year.
According to the report by the organization published on Friday, December 22, the number of new COVID-19 cases during a 28-day period from November 20 to December 17 increased by 52%.
The World Health Organization reported that during this period, the number of new cases was 850,000 more than last year, but the death toll was eight percent lower, totaling over three thousand people.
The World Health Organization has attributed the recent resurgence and widespread outbreak of COVID-19 to a subvariant named BA.2.86 Omicron, which is a sublineage of BA.2.86.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated this summer that this new variant might infect people who have previously contracted COVID-19 or have been vaccinated due to more mutations.
