Over 80% of beggars in Tehran are foreign nationals
The CEO of the Tehran Municipality’s Social Services and Participation Organization said that during the New Year nights, all beggars come to Tehran, and for this reason, we have arranged 37 special patrols for beggars.
He added that the law states beggars should be dealt with, but this law has a flaw and needs to be verified. We have discussed this matter in a meeting. We have a beggar who travels with his family by plane and returns by plane.
In another part of his speech about beggars, he said that since April 2023, we have attracted and organized 4,850 beggars. Over 80% of them are foreign and undocumented and must be deported. We have identified 1,500 professional beggars among them whose job is begging.
We have introduced these individuals to the judiciary. The law says a professional beggar should go to prison, but we face a problem: this issue needs to be verified, filmed, documented, and the financial transactions of this individual should be presented. We need to prove he is a beggar, but we can’t prove it, and he returns to the street.
