Possibility of Anzali Wetland drying up by the year 2059
According to the results of a scientific study on the Eos website affiliated with the American Geophysical Union, the Anzali Wetland may dry up by the year 2059.
The Anzali Wetland, considered the identity of Gilan, is a place where 9 main rivers flow into the Caspian Sea. This wetland is regarded as one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the world, home to at least 150 species of resident and migratory birds.
According to available statistics, 49 species of fish, a multitude of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles also inhabit this wetland.
Experts of the mentioned study have outlined the future of the Anzali Wetland in the coming decades by considering various indicators, including climate change or natural and human factors. This study predicts that the water level of the Caspian Sea will decrease by 4 to 10 meters.
According to this study, the Anzali Wetland will at least become a seasonal water bed by the end of the current century and may even completely dry up by 2060. The destruction of this wetland will not only be an environmental disaster but will also have negative impacts on the ecology and economy of the region.
