Prevalence of ATM Theft with Explosives in Germany

Thieves in the city of Eiterfeld in central Germany destroyed a bank ATM with explosives overnight to steal from it and set the bank building on fire.

In this incident, which occurred around 2 AM on Friday, February 2nd, the bank building caught fire due to the intentional explosion, and afterwards, the thieves managed to escape. The police have not yet succeeded in finding the thieves.

Last night, the residents of the neighborhood first heard two loud explosions, and then the bank’s alarm system went off. Witnesses saw two or three people, who were likely the attackers, fleeing in a car at high speed from their homes’ windows. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire in the two-story bank building in time, so no one was injured.

The police have estimated the damage to the location robbed by the thieves to be at least 600,000 euros, but they have not said whether the thieves managed to take any money.
