Protest by Members of the National Library of Iran Against Mandatory Hijab

Several members of the National Library of Iran in Tehran gathered on Thursday to protest against the mandatory hijab and the suspension of some members for entering the library without adhering to the dress code imposed by the Iranian government.

Participants in the gathering held placards against the mandatory hijab, and some women present threw their headscarves into a fountain in the library’s courtyard as a sign of protest.

The placards held by the participants bore slogans such as ‘Neither Hijab Nor Coercion, Freedom and Equality’ and ‘Unemployment, Exploitation, Women’s Compulsory Hijab’.

It is said that this protest began after library security officers warned several women about their hijab.

Earlier, at the end of last year, several hundred members of this library had issued a statement protesting the suspension of several female members for not wearing headscarves and not adhering to the mandatory hijab.
