Public Transport Strike in Germany
On Monday, March 27, a nationwide strike paralyzed Germany. Employees from long-distance, regional, and urban public transport, railways, buses, and airline and airport staff participated in this 24-hour strike.
This nationwide strike was called by the labor unions EVG and Verdi. Verdi has demanded a 10.5% wage increase for around 2.5 million employees working in public and local transport services, which amounts to at least 500 euros more per month. However, employers have only agreed to a 5% wage increase in two stages and a one-time payment of 2,500 euros.
The labor unions say that no progress has been made in the negotiations with the employers so far. They have threatened that if no agreement is reached in the third round of negotiations starting today, Monday, a new wave of strikes will begin.
