Putin has sent a message to the leader of the Islamic Republic regarding a potential Iranian attack on Israel
The Reuters news agency has reported, citing two senior Iranian sources, that the President of Russia sent a message to the leader of the Islamic Republic urging restraint to avoid civilian casualties in a potential Iranian attack on Israel.
The two Iranian officials, who wished to remain anonymous, told the news agency on Tuesday, August 7, that Vladimir Putin’s message was conveyed to the Islamic Republic’s officials by Sergei Shoigu, the Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
The report adds that Mr. Putin has urged Iran to respond cautiously to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of Hamas’ political bureau, in Tehran.
The report, quoting two Iranian sources, adds that Tehran officials, in their meeting with Mr. Shoigu, the former Russian Defense Minister and current Secretary of the Security Council, also requested the delivery of Russian Sukhoi-35 fighter jets to Iran.
The Kremlin has not responded to Reuters’ questions on this matter, but Russia’s official RIA Novosti news agency has confirmed that Mr. Shoigu discussed the killing of Ismail Haniyeh during his visit to Tehran yesterday.
