Rafael Grossi: The dispute over Iran’s uranium reserves cannot continue indefinitely
Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced at a press conference on the sidelines of the Davos summit that inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities were impossible during periods of social unrest. He warned that the dispute with Iran over high-purity enriched uranium reserves and lack of access to bombed nuclear facilities cannot go on forever.
He said Iran has not yet submitted its special report to the agency. This situation cannot continue indefinitely because eventually, I will have to say that I don’t know where these uranium reserves are, which means there is no guarantee about the fate of these materials.
Grossi emphasized that there is currently no conclusion or accusation, but we tell Iran that it must engage.
According to reports, the International Atomic Energy Agency has inspected all 13 of Iran’s nuclear sites that were not bombed during the twelve-day war. However, it has not yet had access to the three key sites of Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, which were targeted during these conflicts.
According to the agency, at least seven months have passed since the last time Iran’s high-purity enriched uranium reserves were verified, while according to the agency’s guidelines, inspections of these reserves should be conducted monthly.
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency added that despite diplomatic caution, Iran, as a member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, is obligated to adhere to its commitments.
