Rafael Grossi says the JCPOA is outdated under the current circumstances
Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has stated that the JCPOA does not align with the current realities of Iran’s nuclear program and, considering the advancements in this program in nearly all aspects, it is now outdated.
The Director General told Al Arabiya News Network that given the level Iran’s nuclear program has reached, both in terms of existing technologies, which include a new generation of advanced centrifuges, and the amount of nuclear material they have stockpiled, as well as the observed advancements in other technological areas related to or part of Iran’s nuclear program, there is a need for greater transparency. Therefore, we are in discussions with Iran to see what additional measures, beyond what Iran is committed to, we can undertake.
Mr. Grossi said that Masoud Pezeshkian, the new President of Iran, has responded to his letter, which is a sign of the potential resumption of talks to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities.
In response to the question about Mr. Araqchi’s statement that the JCPOA is not revivable, Mr. Grossi said we can bring the positions of Iran and the U.S. closer together. There is a possibility of reaching an agreement, but regarding the revival of the JCPOA, it should be noted that the current reality of Iran’s nuclear program’s advancement has, in a way, replaced the JCPOA. Remember that the JCPOA talked about Iran’s older generation of centrifuges, which are no longer the determining type of equipment Iran possesses. The new centrifuges produce much faster and in much greater quantities.
Therefore, in terms of the advancement of Iran’s nuclear program in nearly all aspects, the JCPOA is now outdated, but with very important modifications, it can be updated.
