Refugee Boat Sinks Off Libyan Coast

Refugee boat sank off the coast of Libya

A rescue group operating in the Mediterranean Sea says a boat carrying refugees has sunk off the coast of Libya.

Italian officials say 30 occupants of the boat that sank off the coast of Libya are missing and may have drowned. According to the Italian Coast Guard, 17 people have been rescued.

The search for the other passengers is ongoing with the help of commercial boats, and a European Union aircraft has also been dispatched to assist.

Alarm Phone, a charitable rescue group, said that on Saturday, after a phone call from the boat’s occupants, they informed the Libyan coastal authorities, but they said the Italian Coast Guard is coordinating the rescue operation. According to this group, there were fifty people on the boat.
