Request for Sanctioning Iranian Parliament Members by the U.S. Congress
A bipartisan coalition in the United States Congress has asked the Biden administration to sanction almost all members of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly in connection with the recent crackdown on anti-government protests in the country.
According to a letter from 26 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate from both parties, 227 out of the 229 members of the Iranian parliament should be sanctioned for providing a legal framework for the Islamic Republic’s security forces to kill, torture, and imprison government opponents.
These U.S. Congress members wrote in their letter, which was sent to the U.S. Departments of State and Treasury, that the Islamic Republic of Iran lacks democratic legitimacy and that its parliament members are not the democratic representatives of the Iranian people.
